‘Born of Woman’: Biology and the Incarnation of Lecture Series

Lectures, which are free and open to the public, will take place at 7 p.m. on April 8, 9, and 10 in the Gonzaga School of Law Barbieri Courtroom. Sponsored by the Catholic Intellectual Tradition Project of the Gonzaga Faith and Reason Institute. Catherine Tkacz, Ph.D., professor of theology at the Ukrainian Catholic University, will explore the relationship between faith and science, and the Christian roots of modern science. Mythbusting! Native American History and Contemporary Issues

Lecture, free and open to the public, begins at 5:30 p.m. in Jepson Center’s Wolff Auditorium. Laurie Arnold, director of Gonzaga’s Native American Studies program and assistant professor of history, will discuss myths regarding Native American culture and more. Rukavina Lecture Series: Fairness and Favoritism

CANCELED: Event has been canceled due to inclement travel weather for the speaker. Efforts are being made to reschedule the lecture.

Sponsored by the Gonzaga philosophy department, this free public lecture begins at 5 p.m. in the Jepson Center’s Wolff Auditorium. Stephen Asma, professor of philosophy at Columbia College, Chicago, explores the concept of fairness. He will describe the hidden favoritism lurking under the veneer of our fairness and will offer arguments in defense of favoritism. Gonzaga Visiting Writers Series: Michael Gurian

Free and open to the public, this concluding event in the celebrated series features a reading by Michael Gurian, a marriage and family counselor in private practice and the author of 28 books. Debate on Climate and the Environment

Sponsored by the Washington Policy Center, the event begins at 7 p.m. in the Jepson Center’s Wolff Auditorium. Lecture on Ancient Sparta

The Gonzaga history and classical civilizations departments will host a lecture by Ellen Millender, a professor of classics at Reed College, on “Classical Sparta and the Spectacle of Hoplite Warfare,” at 4:30 p.m. in the Jepson Center Wolff Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. Millender, an expert on ancient Sparta, will speak about ancient warfare, the communities that practiced it (especially Sparta), and how such warfare functioned as an instrument of political action that responded to changing ideological and political needs. Reception for Senior Art Exhibition

Free and open to the public, the reception begins at 5 p.m. in the Jundt Art Center, Room 115. The exhibition features the work of Gonzaga senior art students: Mariah Chavez, Claire Hart, Brian Joyce, Claire Kane, Riley MacKey, Max Marlett, Maria Mondloch, and Kelly Williams. The Gallery will be open for free public walk-throughs with the artists at 10:30 a.m. on April 18. GUSR Spring Play Performance: A High School Musical

Gonzaga University Specialized Recreation’s spring play is a series of skits and sketch comedies that take a satirical look at high school movie characters – from Napoleon Dynamite to Ferris Bueller and others. This play is an opportunity for the Gonzaga and Spokane communities to jointly celebrate the accomplishments and gifts of the participants of GUSR. Gonzaga Symphony Orchestra’s season finale, conducted by Kevin Hekmatpanah and featuring world-renowned bassist Gary Karr, begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox, 1001 W. Handel’s ‘Messiah,’ Parts II and III

Gonzaga University Concert Choir and Incendo Music Ensemble present a performance George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah” at 7:30 p.m. in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Spokane. Performing with professional orchestra, the concert will be conducted by Timothy Westerhaus and features nine student soloists singing all arias from Parts II and III. Gonzaga University Commencement Ceremonies

Father Greg Boyle, S.J., a 1977 Gonzaga alumnus and founder of the nonprofit Homeboy Industries, the nation’s largest gang intervention program, will be the keynote speaker at the undergraduate ceremony at 9:30 a.m., Sunday, May 10 in the Spokane Arena. The ceremony is among Gonzaga’s three 122nd commencement exercises May 9-10. Washington State Supreme Court Justice Mary Fairhurst, a Gonzaga University School of Law alumna (’84), will be the keynote speaker at the Law School commencement, starting at 9 a.m., Saturday, May 9 at the McCarthey Athletic Center. Author and journalist Blaine Harden, a 1974 Gonzaga alumnus, will deliver the keynote address at the graduate ceremony at noon, Saturday, May 9 in the McCarthey Athletic Center.
