‘Born of Woman’: Biology and the Incarnation of Lecture Series
Lectures, which are free and open to the public, will take place at 7 p.m. on April 8, 9, and 10 in the Gonzaga School of Law Barbieri Courtroom. Sponsored by the Catholic Intellectual Tradition Project of the Gonzaga Faith and Reason Institute. Catherine Tkacz, Ph.D., professor of theology at the Ukrainian Catholic University, will explore the relationship between faith and science, and the Christian roots of modern science. Lecture on Ancient Sparta
The Gonzaga history and classical civilizations departments will host a lecture by Ellen Millender, a professor of classics at Reed College, on “Classical Sparta and the Spectacle of Hoplite Warfare,” at 4:30 p.m. in the Jepson Center Wolff Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. Millender, an expert on ancient Sparta, will speak about ancient warfare, the communities that practiced it (especially Sparta), and how such warfare functioned as an instrument of political action that responded to changing ideological and political needs. Gonzaga University Concert Choir and Incendo Music Ensemble present a performance George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah” at 7:30 p.m. in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Spokane. Father Greg Boyle, S.J., a 1977 Gonzaga alumnus and founder of the nonprofit Homeboy Industries, the nation’s largest gang intervention program, will be the keynote speaker at the undergraduate ceremony at 9:30 a.m., Sunday, May 10 in the Spokane Arena. The ceremony is among Gonzaga’s three 122nd commencement exercises May 9-10. Washington State Supreme Court Justice Mary Fairhurst, a Gonzaga University School of Law alumna (’84), will be the keynote speaker at the Law School commencement, starting at 9 a.m., Saturday, May 9 at the McCarthey Athletic Center. Author and journalist Blaine Harden, a 1974 Gonzaga alumnus, will deliver the keynote address at the graduate ceremony at noon, Saturday, May 9 in the McCarthey Athletic Center.
