Kreielsheimer Visiting Artist Lecture Series: "New Ways in an Old Tradition: Art of Revealing and Healing" - Roin Morigeau
Jundt Art Center Auditorium
Lecture Description: Roin will be describing a new body of work produced for a solo exhibition in January 2022, at EWU Art Gallery. My studio practice is rooted in investigating the dichotomy between matriarchal and patriarchal space. Using pen, ink, gouche, and sculptural techniques I often produce floating abstract entities and imaged spacescapes that explore themes of buoyancy, arrival, connection, and attachment. Although trained in various mediums, from wood, metal, glass, and vinyl as a set fabricator, a spinal injury forced me to shift to lighter materials. These new works are made in ceremony to serve as a place of respite and retreat for both viewer and artist to find comfort in an otherwise uncomfortable world.
"Home: Imagining the Irrevocable" - Guest Curated by Olivia Evans and Tracy Poindexter-Canton
Gonzaga University Urban Arts Center
“Home: Imagining the Irrevocable”, an exhibit featuring the works of local black artists in eastern WA. Guest curators: Olivia Evans and Tracy Poindexter-Canton
This exhibit will engage artists of various disciplines (visual, music, literary, etc.) in a creative and collaborative exploration around the concept of “home.” The exhibit theme draws inspiration from the James Baldwin quote, “Perhaps home is not a place, but simply an irrevocable condition (Giovanni’s Room,1956).” Through this theme, the exhibit seeks to examine how “home” has, and continues to be defined by Black Americans amidst the historical and contemporary challenges of displacement, marginalization and otherness.
Kreielsheimer Visiting Artist Lecture Series: "New Ways in an Old Tradition: Shared Identities in Portraiture" - June T. Sanders
Jundt Art Center Auditorium
Lecture Description: June T Sanders will be describing her most recent body of work ‘Easy World,’ as well as her overall artistic practice & portraiture ethos. June T Sanders’ photographic work is an invitation to the limits of visibility: Through careful and collaborative moments combined with unreliable equipment - she constructs a landscape of bodies both shielded and confrontational. Her portraits are instances of endearment and discretion. Of Trans-Poetics. A moment and an identity hinted towards but not fully captured.About the Speaker: June T Sanders is a trans artist, curator, and educator living in rural Eastern WA. She is an Assistant Professor with the Digital Technology & Culture Department at Washington State University, and a recent recipient of the 2020 Blue Sky Curatorial Prize and the New Hampshire Institute of Art Teti Research Fellowship. She has also taught at Lightwork & the New York State Summer School of the Arts. Her work has been shown at the Colorado Photographic Arts Center (Denver), Amos Eno Gallery (Brooklyn), Tropical Contemporary (Portland), The Bob Mizer Foundation, The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts, and Lawrence University — and has appeared in Vice, Paper Journal, Leste Magazine, Humble Arts Foundation, Strange Fire Collective, and Physique Pictorial. Her images reflect a world yet to be.
Spokane River Sound Action
Gonzaga University Urban Arts Center
Dates: January 7-23Description: Spokane River Sound Action records and listens to the river from above and below. From above, we hear the spray of water and air, and the flow which brings a sense of collective care, movement, and presence. From below, the underwater microphone (hydrophone) hears things which are surprisingly melodic, suggesting a kind of personality. These recordings will be presented in immersive, quadrophonic sounds and video projections at the GUUAC by the Spokane Laboratory Art + Residency artists, Mill Canyon Sound Actions (Eyvind Kang, Jessika Kenney, Jeremy Sherrer) and joined by very special guests in a live streamed performance on Jan 11th.
Kreielsheimer Lecture Series - Music at the Border of Sound (Eyvind Kang & Jessika Kenney)
Jundt Auditorium
Lecture Description: Eyvind Kang and Jessika Kenney are musicians who have released 5 albums as a duo, as well as co-creating and performing compositions for orchestras, voices, electronics, video, and non-traditional instrumentations. They describe their work as music on the border of sound, working with sensory substitution “through a poetic lens of sound and image.” Kang and Kenney will share their collaborative and solo works and discuss their process in the Summer Residency at Laboratory, Spokane. Their lecture will also include a presentation on the January 2022 exhibition at Gonzaga University Urban Arts Center, as part of Mill Canyon Sound Actions collective.
About the Artists: Eyvind Kang is a Faculty Professor, Co-Director of Composition and Experimental Sound Practices, Performer-Composer, and Experimental Pop at the California Institute of Art. As a violist he has been featured by a wide range of independent musicians including Bill Frisell, Laurie Anderson, John Zorn, the Sun City Girls, and Secret Chiefs. His ongoing, genre defying collaboration with composer and singer Jessika Kenney has been described as "serious, refined music" (The New York Times), taking the form of sound actions and installations, choral and orchestral works, and minimalist vocal and string arrangement, with two releases on Ideologic Organ (2011, 2013) curated by Stephen O'Malley.
Jessika Kenney is an award-winning vocalist, composer, sound artist, producer, writer and teacher, working for the last 25 years in realms of the subtle melody, with attention to ways of listening, perceiving, and translating experience. Kenney's music can be heard on Ideologic Organ, Black Truffle, Weyrd Son, SIGE, and other labels. She has performed her own compositions and those of many colleagues, as well as music of Annea Lockwood, Alvin Lucier, Sarah Davachi, Hossein Omoumi, Morton Feldman, Giacinto Scelsi, Marina Rosenfeld, Jarrad Powell, Trimpin, Tadao Sawai, and many others, informed by the atmospheres and techniques absorbed through the practices and deep study of Javanese sindhenan and Persian radifs. Kenney's ongoing collaborations with Eyvind Kang have been described as "serious, refined music" by the New York Times. Her involvements in noise, metal, electronic music and minimalism arise out of her Spokane punk origins and her insights into trans-disciplinary ways of knowing music and performance. Her 2015 gamelan-based LP "ATRIA" was released by the avant-metal SIGE label, alongside a large-scale, site-specific and interactive sound, calligraphic score, sculpture, and video installation called "Anchor Zero", filling five rooms for a month at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle.
