After Graduation Fellowships

General

  • US Department of State - International and Foreign Language Education website to help U.S. citizens identify programs that can help them learn a particular language. The site features an interactive quiz that filters language programs by type of learner, language of interest, world region, and more. Institutions of higher education can also host some of these language programs
    • Consular Fellow Program (May deadline) - use your proficiency in your second language as part of a national service program working in U.S. embassies and consulates abroad. The Consular Fellows Program is a limited non-career appointment of up to five years which directly supports the U.S. Department of State’s mission to provide overseas consular services which encompasses adjudicating visa applications of foreign citizens seeking to come to the United States to visit, study, or work, and assist U.S. citizens traveling or living abroad. New hires will be eligible to receive a bonus of up to 10% of their salary with a four-year service commitment, as well as the Student Loan Repayment Program.

Student Excel Scholarships

Benjamin Gilman Scholarship for Undergraduate Study Abroad

The Benjamin A Gilman Scholarship offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and is open to U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. The program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints.

Blakemore Freeman Fellowships

The Blakemore Freeman Fellowships fund an academic year of advanced language study abroad in Chinese, Japanese, Korean and selected Southeast Asian languages.

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships

Boren awards are an initiative of the Defense Language and National Security Education Office. Scholars and Fellow study a wide range of critical languages including Arabic, and Chinese. Boren awards are available to students of all proficiency levels who are committed to enhancing their skills.

Critical Language Scholarship Program

The Critical Language Scholarship Program is a summer study abroad opportunity for North American university students to learn language essential to the US's engagement with the world. These languages include Arabic, Chinese, and Japanese among others.

Please take note that each candidate must procure a Letter of Endorsement from Gonzaga University. Participation in the process described here is a prerequisite to the University's decision to grant this endorsement.
