Tuition Benefits

The tuition waiver is an internal benefit program that allows eligible employees, spouses and their dependent children to take courses at Gonzaga University. The amount of tuition covered by the waiver is determined by the employee's length of service with the University as established by the Human Resource Office.

Most employees are eligible to take classes with a waived tuition after 1 year of working 40 hours per week. An estimated 15% of the Student Affairs Division has used this amazing benefit to earn the Masters in Organizational Leadership, Masters in Business or EdD in Education or Leadership.

It's no secret that Spokane is a mostly white city. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 86 percent of the city population is white, more than 10 percent higher than the percentage of white people in Washington, and the U.S. (Wilson Criscione, Inlander, 2017).  Perhaps because of this, more groups and coalitions emerge every year to create spaces and places for folks from traditionally marginalized backgrounds. Gonzaga is proud to support our LGBTQ+ colleagues, and understand some of the sticky nuances with being out at a Catholic University.  If you are looking for a more formal connection, we encourage you to meet up with the Out at GU faculty and staff group. Of course you are always welcome to connect with the Lincoln LGBTQ+ Resource Center in Hemmingson as well. Our Jesuits are supportive of this community and host an annual Lavender Mass.

If you love the outdoors, hiking, canoeing, skiing, etc, then Spokane is going to be a dream for you. Spokane is located right on the Spokane River and the Centennial Trail, an off road, paved bike/pedestrian path that you can access from campus to go downtown, or the other direction all the way to the Montana State’s western border, as it intersects with the Trail of the Coeur de Alene’s.

REI names Spokane in their Top 50 Cities for Access to the Outdoors

The Urban Outdoor Access Analysis–conducted by the Trust for Public Land and supported by REI–placed equal weight on the per-capita acreage of public land within a 60-minute drive of each city and the number of residents that have a park within a 10-minute walk of home. Spokane made the list along with 3 other Washington cities: Bellevue, Seattle and Vancouver. According to REI’s article, “because the analysis considers urban park access along with surrounding public lands, the top 50 cities include several places that people don’t automatically associate with outdoor recreation–like Newark, New Jersey.” “Even though there’s not a lot of public land around there, they’re doing a lot with their park system,” said Fred Gifford, director of GIS at the Trust for Public Land.

Spokane Transit Authority

• Our Zag Cards enable us to ride the local bus system for FREE.
• This transit system, unlike most others in the country, is on a loop system.  All transit comes and goes from one main hub downtown.  That means you can get on any bus, going in any direction and not get lost because you can stay on the bus until it returns to the terminal and then catch the bus you actually need.

Greyhound Station

• The Greyhound bus terminal and train station is combined in one location 2 miles from GU.

Spokane International Airport (GEG)

Is a commercial airport located approximately 7 miles (11 km) Southwest of downtown Spokane, Washington. It is the primary airport serving the Inland Northwest, which consists of 30 counties and includes areas such as Spokane, the Tri-Cities, both in Eastern Washington, and Coeur d'Alene in North Idaho.
