When is Inauguration?
The inauguration installation ceremony of Dr. Katia Passerini is Friday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m. at McCarthey Athletic Center, and there are several events celebrating Gonzaga’s history, mission, academic expertise and partnerships in the community leading up to that.
Who gets to go to the installation ceremony?
All are welcome! We just ask that you let us know you’re coming – those interested in attending can RSVP here, just pick the appropriate link, ie. “Families, Students, Faculty & Staff,” “Alumni,” “Community Member,” etc.
What can I expect at the installation ceremony if I go?
The inauguration of President Katia Passerini marks an historic moment in Gonzaga University’s history. The celebration on Friday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m. will be rooted in Gonzaga’s Jesuit, Catholic mission, and will highlight Gonzaga’s deep connection to the community and affirm a shared commitment to opening doors of opportunity, empowering human potential and leading with hope. Among the speakers will be President Katia Passerini, Gonzaga Board of Trustees Chair Mike Reilly, Gonzaga Student Body Association President Alyssa Guzman, and a keynote address by special guest Sister Raffaella Petrini, F.S.E.
Those planning to attend should expect the same security measures as other events at McCarthey Athletic Center. We encourage carpooling and the use of public transportation as parking is limited on campus. The Spokane Transit Authority City Line has stops every 10 minutes or less within talking distance to McCarthey Athletic Center.
Who is Sister Raffaella Petrini?
She is president of the Pontifical Commission for the Vatican City State and president of the Governate of the Vatican City State. The Pontifical Commission was formed in 1939 to work as the legislative body of Vatican City in Rome, and is delegated authority by the Pope himself. Sister Petrini is the first woman and first non-Cardinal to serve in the role. Pope Francis named her to the role on Feb. 15, 2025, and after his death, his successor Pope Leo XIV confirmed her role on May 9, the day after he took office. Sister Petrini and President Passerini met when Sister Petrini was awarded an honorary degree at Seton Hall, and they realized they’d gone to the same university in Rome, one year apart, and soon developed a friendship.

Isn’t Zagapalooza happening at the same time?
Yes! Gonzaga alumni and friends are welcome to all the inauguration festivities, and there is a weekend full of opportunities Sept 26-28 to connect with fellow Zags and celebrate the Gonzaga community. You can find out about Zagapalooza right here.
Does it cost anything to attend the installation ceremony or the other events of inauguration week?
All events are free. Heartfelt gratitude to Gonzaga’s generous benefactors and sponsors for their invaluable support in underwriting the inauguration activities and events. Their commitment and partnership have helped make this historic occasion truly memorable.
Why does Gonzaga have an inauguration?
Gonzaga holds an inauguration ceremony for its new president because, in Jesuit and Catholic higher education tradition, the presidency is not only an executive role but also a symbolic one, representing the Jesuit mission of educating students for lives of leadership and service. The inauguration invites the community to ritually affirm its identity and recommit to that mission under new leadership.
Will classes be cancelled for any inauguration week events?
No. The University will operate as usual and the regular academic schedule will remain in effect. While the academic schedule continues, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in inauguration events as scheduling permits. More specific guidance can be found here.
