Gonzaga Debate Institute

2026 Gonzaga Debate and Speech Institute

Welcome to the home of the 2026 Gonzaga Debate Institute (GDI)! Whether you’re here to apply or simply learn more, we invite you to explore our programs, curriculum, and faculty. For more than 50 years, students from across the nation and around the world have come to the GDI to deepen their understanding of competitive debate. They are drawn by our award-winning faculty, our commitment to skills-based learning, and our beautiful location on Gonzaga’s campus along the Spokane River in Washington’s Inland Northwest.

GDI offers programs for every level from novices to rising sophomores to experienced juniors and seniors. Students staying on campus will live in historic Desmet Hall, eat in the Hemmingson Center’s dining facilities, and participate in labs, lectures, and debates held in Jepson Center and College Hall.

Our curriculum emphasizes daily, hands-on learning in small lab groups led by some of the most experienced debate instructors in the country. Students receive extensive practice debates, personalized feedback, and numerous opportunities to refine their skills. The institute concludes with the GDI Tournament, where participants compete against their peers and receive critiques from top college and high school judges.

If you’re seeking a challenging, rewarding, and competitive summer experience, we encourage you to join us for an exceptional summer at GDI. Our application is available now—apply early!
