Gonzaga Non-Sponsored Study Abroad Programs

Non-Sponsored study abroad programs are not sponsored by Gonzaga.  Therefore, payments are handled by the external institution, credits are treated as transfer credits and a consortium agreement or written arrangement with the other institution may be needed to determine financial aid eligibility and transfer of academic credits.  If you are planning to enroll in a Non-Sponsored Study Abroad program, below is some helpful information.

  •  Tuition & Fees (Non-Sponsored Program)
    • Students will pay tuition and program costs directly to the outside (non-sponsored) institution or program provider.  Students do NOT pay Gonzaga tuition or fees during a non-sponsored program because this program is not a Gonzaga administered program.
    • All invoices, payment due dates, payment options, and program costs & fees would be determined and billed entirely by the outside (non-sponsored) program.
  • Financial Aid Eligibility (Non-Sponsored Program)
    • Students enrolled in a Non-Sponsored study abroad program will not be eligible for their institutional (Gonzaga) Funding.
    • Students may still be eligible for their Federal (Title IV) and State Funding, but must contact the Financial Aid Office to inquire about a Consortium Agreement (written arrangement with another institution) to determine eligibility.  A consortium agreement is a formal contract between two universities that allows students to enroll at one institution and take courses at another while still receiving financial aid, and academic credit at their home institution (the university where the student is officially enrolled and receives their degree).  If you will be studying in a non-sponsored program and wanting to utilize your financial aid, you will want to complete a Consortium Agreement.  Once completed, the Consortium Agreement can be submitted to the Financial Aid Office for processing.
Ready to Complete Your Consortium Agreement?
  • Next Steps (Non-Sponsored Program)
    • Get approval in advance from Gonzaga Academic Advisors or Department Chairs. See the Step by Step Guide to Studying Abroad webpage for more information.
    • Apply for a Leave of Absence through the Registrar's Office.  See the Academic Policies and Procedures webpage for more information.
    • Non-Sponsored programs are treated like transfer credit.  Confirm that credits will transfer and apply towards fulfillment of Core or Major requirements.
    • Contact the Financial Aid Office and the Office of Student Accounts to notify them of your enrollment plans and any additional steps needed.
